Khan aur Shetty ke beech first planned collaboration Angoor (1982) ka remake tha. iske bajay Chennai Express ki script, jise shuru me khan ke liye ek backup project ke roop me likha gaya tha, ko chuna gaya tha. ek “commercial romance” ke roop me determined is film ka originally titled Ready Steady Po tha.
Filming October 2012 me Mehboob Studio me shuru hua aur May 2013 tak poora ho gaya. film ka ek bada hissa Ooty me set kiya gaya tha, jiske liye Wai aur Ramoji Film City me bhi set banaye gaye the. Chennai Express ke liye soundtrack Vishal–Shekhar duara composed tha.
Jiski background score Amar Mohile duara banayi gayi thi. Swades (2004) ke baad khan ke saath apni first active project ko mark karte huye UTV Motion Pictures producer aur distributor board par aaye.
Chennai Express Cast ko overseas markets me 8 August 2013 ko aur ek din baad India me theatrically jaari kiya gaya tha. film ko critics se mixed reviews mile aur isne India aur overseas me box office records tod diye, domestically par ₹1 billion (US$13 million) ka collect karne wali quickest film ban gayi.
Film ne 3 Idiots (2009) ko peechhe chhod diya aur us time highest-grossing Bollywood film worldwide ban gayi. yah ab tak ki 21st highest grossing Indian film of all time hai.
59th Filmfare Awards me, Chennai Express Cast ko Best Film, Best Director (Shetty), Best Actor (Khan) and Best Actress (Padukone) including 7 nominations receive huye.
